Performance characteristics of our smoke filters – from individual workstations to central smoke extraction systems

ULMATEC produces, supplies and installs smoke filters in performance sizes from 100 – 250.000 m³/h as standard systems.
The scope of delivery includes both mobile smoke filter extraction systems, e.g. as welding fume filters, and stationary filter systems with stands for wall mounting, outdoor installation or on the roof.

We develop special systems and sizes in close cooperation and according to the requirements of our customers – always individually and modularly, of course.

ULMATEC manufactures smoke filters in seven sizes from "XS to XXL" and can also combine them depending on the application.

They are expandable and, due to their modular design, can be individually adapted to all circumstances and customer requirements.

Why smoke filters are indispensable in industry & production

Welding fumes, solder particles, and thermal aerosols contain extremely fine particles, often with toxic components such as chromium, nickel, or zinc oxide. Without effective filtration, these particles enter the indoor air unhindered – with health, technical, and legal consequences.

Ensuring occupational safety and health

Smoke particles penetrate deep into the lungs, can trigger allergies, and are sometimes considered carcinogenic. A high-performance smoke filter reliably protects employees.

Ensuring production quality and machine availability

Fine smoke particles settle on surfaces, causing malfunctions in control electronics, sensors or optics – especially in automated systems.

Comply with laws and standards

Smoke filters help to comply with workplace exposure limits (WEL) according to TRGS 900 or DGUV 109-002 – while simultaneously reducing emissions in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG).

ULMATEC smoke filters – modular, scalable, future-proof

Every ULMATEC smoke filter is part of a sophisticated system – configurable according to medium, process, and plant structure. Whether as a single filter module or as an integrated smoke extraction system.

Technology Overview
  • Filter levels:
    • Pre-separators (e.g., cyclones) for coarse particles and as spark protection
    • Main filter (e.g. cartridge filter) for fine dust
    • Post-filter: HEPA, activated carbon, depending on the medium
  • Cleaning: automatic (JetPulse), mechanical or manual
  • Control: analog or digital – with remote monitoring upon request
  • Volume flow: 500 to over 250.000 m³/h
  • Mounting options: stationary, mobile, wall-mounted, modularly integrable
  • ATEX options: available for explosive fume components
  • Fire protection – spark detection with shutdown and optional extinguishing
  • Sound insulation & heat recovery: integrable for energy-efficient operation

Special filter technology for demanding applications

Storage filters for oily welding applications

Welding oiled or coated workpieces produces particularly contaminated fume particles that quickly saturate conventional filter media. In such cases, ULMATEC storage filters are used as replaceable filters – specifically designed for high particle and aerosol loads. They ensure reliable filtration with minimal maintenance and are easy to replace.

Precoating device as filter protection

For demanding applications, the smoke filter can be additionally equipped with a precoating device. This applies a fine protective powder (precoat) to the filter medium, preventing clogging by oils, resins, or fine dust particles. This significantly increases the filter's service life and improves its cleaning performance – ideal for difficult media or high throughput.

Flexible plant design – vertical, horizontal or split

ULMATEC extraction systems are not only powerful, but also exceptionally adaptable in their design.

Thanks to our modular system design, the individual components of the system can be precisely tailored to your spatial conditions and technical requirements.

Depending on the application, hall layout or space requirements, three setup options are available:

  • Vertical: Compact vertical design – ideal for limited floor space
  • Horizontal: Low-profile design extending horizontally – e.g., under mezzanine levels or in row installations
  • Split: The modules are divided into two separate, adjacent units.

This flexibility allows our systems to be integrated efficiently and in a space-saving manner even in demanding environments – without compromising performance, accessibility or ease of maintenance.

Typical applications for smoke filters

Welding fumes in sheet metal processing

Particles from stainless steel processing (containing CrNi) – use of a fume filter with multi-stage filtration, HEPA post-filter and central control.

Solder fume extraction in electronics manufacturing

Finest particles and gases – compact filter modules with activated carbon, for mounting on soldering frames or workbenches.

Fume extraction in thermal separation processes

Plasma cutting, laser cutting – high-performance Cartridge filter system with JetPulse system and segmented airflow.

Consulting, planning & system integration – simply solved with ULMATEC

Analysis & Consulting

We determine particle size, temperature, air volume and explosion potential – and derive the appropriate smoke filter solution from this.

Integration into existing systems

Our smoke filters can be integrated into existing systems as an extension or replacement – including control, airflow and filter management.

Documentation & Funding

All systems meet applicable standards, are eligible for funding (BAFA, KfW) and are delivered including technical documentation – with a maintenance contract upon request.

Explanations of terms related to smoke filters

In the context of industrial smoke extraction Various terms are used. Here's an overview:

  • Smoke filter: General term for filter units for separating airborne smoke particles – e.g. from thermal or chemical processes.
  • Smoke filter extraction system: Complete system consisting of filter unit, fan, control unit and pipe system for capturing and cleaning smoke.
  • Welding fume filters: Special filters for metallic welding fumes – often multi-stage with HEPA and activated carbon.
  • HEPA post-filter: High-performance fine dust filter, used for particularly fine and harmful particles.
  • Activated carbon filter: Supplementary filter for the separation of gaseous components – e.g., soldering fumes, adhesive vapors, or solvents.
  • JetPulse cleaning: Compressed air-based cleaning for cartridge filter – ensures constant airflow and long service life.
  • Mobile smoke filter unit: Mobile filter system – e.g. for temporary workplaces or as a replacement solution.
  • Central smoke filtration system: System for simultaneously supplying multiple workstations or machines with a central filter unit.
  • ATEX smoke filters: Version for flammable or explosive smoke components.

Frequently asked questions about smoke filters

Finest particles in the submicron range – e.g. from welding fumes, soldering processes, thermal separation processes or chemical reactions.

If the emitted particles are respirable or toxic – e.g., CrNi welding fumes, medical residues, or ultrafine dust.

This depends on the load, filter type, and cleaning process. Automatic systems (JetPulse) significantly extend the service life.

Yes – many ULMATEC smoke filters are modular and can be connected to existing extraction systems or replace outdated systems.

Yes – especially when it comes to investments in occupational safety and emissions reduction. We can advise you on BAFA or KfW funding.

ULMATEC smoke filters – reliable filtration for clean processes

Whether welding fumes, soldering fumes, or thermal emissions: ULMATEC fume filters capture airborne pollutants right where they originate – efficiently, adaptably, and for industrial applications. With sophisticated filter technology, accessories such as precoating units, and optional storage filters for oil-containing applications, we offer reliable solutions for all areas of use.
